Did you know that 4 out of 6 children born in a hospital in Honduras leave the
hospital without so much as a baby blanket? Thanks to the efforts of Jorge Uribe and Rita Badami we hope to change this. In a joint effort between Niskayuna Rotary and GE we are trying to supply these children with one of the most essential needs, a baby blanket, their first article of clothing, and a symbol that they too are important. There are 5 easy ways to get involved and make a difference.
- Make “no-sewing-skills-required” blankets – we provide instructions and material.
- Sew fleece/flannel blankets – we provide the instructions and material(*).
- Provide fleece/flannel material for someone else to make the blanket.
- Purchase baby blankets
- Make a donation that can be used towards shipping the blankets
(*) material donated by General Electric
“…if I had the money to buy something really nice for my baby I would buy a blanket just like the one you gave my baby – thank you so much! ” – a new mother at Olanchito
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the many people involved in the Blankets for Babies project, Niskayuna Rotary is proud to announce that we have successfully shipped 850 blankets to the hospital in Olanchito. Thank you to all of those who have assisted us in our efforts to bring warmth and goodwill to the children of Honduras. We will be posting updates from time to time with regards to the progress of this project.
We are now looking ahead to what may be our first annual 24 hour Sew-athon to raise money for the shipping of 3,000 blankets. For information regarding this effort please feel free to attend either a meeting for the Niskayuna Rotary Club, or contact us via email at club@niskyrotary.com
